Condition of the month

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. The normal shape of a person's spine includes a curve at the top of the shoulder and a curve at the lower back. If your spine is curved from side to side or in an “S” or “C” shape, you might have scoliosis. Scoliosis occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. Dr. Rush has detailed knowledge of musculoskeletal issues, conditions, and disorders. Many adults with scoliosis find non-drug, non-invasive chiropractic treatments can help reduce their pain by decreasing the pressure on their nervous system and strengthening their body's core. Early detection of scoliosis can either reduce or correct the potential misalignments and prevent future problems.

Children can be screened at any age, although scoliosis is most commonly discovered at the child's growth spurt (10 to 15 years old). The Scoliosis Research Society recommends that girls be screened twice, at 10 and 12 years of age (grades 5 and 7), and boys once at 12 or 13 years of age (grades 8 or 9).

Scoliosis is a spinal deformity that cannot be cured, but its progression and severity can be managed with an effective treatment plan. The main condition characteristic that determines its severity is the size of the abnormal spinal curvature.
